Ygritte’s Savage in Game of Thrones

The runaways’ sister Arya (Maisie Williams), meanwhile, is in a much better position as Tywin’s (Charles Dance) cross-dressing apprentice in game of thrones two.

Hey, remember rickety old Maester Pycelle? He’s back, attempting to give Cersei some advice, which she of course does not listen to. She wants one thing from him: Essence of Nightshade. One drop soothes the nerves. Three will put you to sleep. Ten will kill you. Exposition!

And while the impending battle is likely the pressing concern for the viewer in game of thrones, Martin and Marshall take their time by setting up the preparation for war; paying considerable attention to the sense of impending doom and helplessness, as nearly everyone in King’s Landing seems to reconcile themselves with the likelihood that this will be their last night on earth. There is even a Saving Private Ryan moment, where a soldier in Stannis’ army does the old Technicolor Yawn in anticipation for the carnage about to be unleashed.

Take, for instance, Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage), who came up with the original plan of attack against King Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane): using wildfire, a green liquid that is set aflame, to decimate Stannis’ fleet, rallying the soldiers to sneak-attack Stannis’ men from behind the gate and ostensibly buying enough time to allow his father, Tywin (Charles Dance), to save the day.

Jon (Kit Harrington), still trekking through the snow alongside his wildling-with-benefits Ygritte (Rose Leslie), enjoyed a beautiful night of spooning — but the fun ended there. After using the world’s worst pick-up line to seduce him (“It don’t have teeth”), Ygritte’s savage peeps surrounded Jon and kidnapped him. I’m thinking it would be too naive to assume they want to make him their beautiful new queen. In fact, judging by the previews, it looks like he’s about to get up-close-and-personal with Mance Rayder. Gulp.

This episode’s of game of thrones military confrontation has been long in coming: To protect their family unit – spiritually fraught, but beyond wealthy in gold and pride – the Lannisters have bungled their governance spectacularly. They’ve put a dangerously cruel and impulsive child of incest on the throne after murdering and beheading almost all their potential allies, and have frittered away literal and political capital until they can barely defend their city against the advances of Stannis Baratheon, an uptight stick-in-the-mud with a creepy religion whose own brother (before Stannis’ sorceress murdered him) pointedly let him know that no one wants him for their king.

As a fan of drama, enjoying game of thrones is a must.
