Game of Thrones is an HBO adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel series “A Song of Ice and Fire”. Set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, Game of Thrones chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom’s seven noble families for control of the Iron Throne; as the series opens, additional threats from the snow and ice covered region north of Westeros and from the eastern continent across a narrow sea are simultaneously beginning to rise.We live in a world where the Lord of the Rings has been filmed well, there was a Watchmen movie that came from a major studio, and even the Walking Dead has been made into an episodic television series. Lengthy, intense dramas from science fiction and fantasy are now being made for both the big and small screen, and it’s a wonderful thing. On a night when two of the most engaging television series bowed out with season finales, each took vastly different paths. On Sunday, HBO’s Game of Thrones showed how hard-earned character development plus smart and imaginative storytelling can set up a second season while closing out the first with a rousing end. AMC’s The Killing, on the other hand, tried to be enigmatic with its continued, dubious use of red herrings and managed to underscore how poorly developed the characters were in the first place, while using one last twist and lame cliffhanger to drag viewers into a second season.

In the strong winds caused by the tail end of Hurricane Katia, the tent was blown apart with people trapped inside.Syfy Films, the theatrical division created in December 2010 as a joint venture between Syfy and Universal Pictures, has acquired the screen rights to Wild Cards, a superhero anthology edited, co-created and co-written by Martin.Despite Game of Thrones losing out on the major award of the evening, bowing to Mad Men in the Best Drama category, the cast and crew couldn’t have been more ecstatic to see Peter Dinklage win the Best Supporting Actor Emmy for his memorable portrayal of Tyrion Lannister. “I’m going back

to work and I’m giving (the Emmy) to Lena Headey because she deserves it more than I do,” Dinklage joked as Headey laughed along, “I’m bringing it to set and demanding respect from the rest of the cast and crew. Things are going to change!”The problem is that these properties are hard to translate. The pilot for the Walking Dead was amazing, but the rest of the season fizzled spectacularly. Many fans of George R.R. Martin’s books were afraid the same was going to happen to the Game of Thrones series, and the books seemed unfilmable. In a surprise twist, the first season of the show hasn’t been just good for a fantasy series, it’s been an amazing piece of storytelling, full stop. We’re going to talk about why it has succeeded, and why you need to be watching.
